To make travelling across Victoria more accessible, the Department of Transport is introducing a regional fare cap from 31 March 2023. This will reduce the cost of travel between regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne for all Victorians.
From 31 March 2023, tickets for public transport throughout Victoria will cap at $9.20 (full fare) or $4.60 (concession) per weekday. On weekends and public holidays, tickets will cost up to $6.70 (full fare) or $3.35 (concession).
To make the most of the new fare caps, make sure you:
- book your ticket on the V/Line booking system (coming soon)
- plan your ahead of time
- bike, ride or walk to the station if possible
- touch on and off with your myki
- register your i and set auto or use instant top .
The fare cap will encourage Victorians to connect with family and friends and reduce the cost of travel between regional Victoria and metropolitan Melbourne for everything from events and shopping to appointments and employment.
Regional commuters who use a myki Pass will also have their fares capped at the Melbourne Zone 1 + 2 rate (currently $46 per week for the 7-day pass, or $5.52 a day for the 28–365-day pass).
Older Victorians with a Seniors Card will still be eligible for a 50 per cent discount on trains, trams, and buses, including V/Line trains and coaches. This means cardholders can travel on a weekday for no more than $4.60 per day. Cardholders may also travel on a weekend or public holiday for no more than $3.35 per day, if you travel through more than two consecutive zones.
Seniors Card benefits
Seniors Card holders will continue to be eligible for free weekend travel in any two consecutive zones and on regional town buses. They will also have access to free travel during the annual Victorian Seniors Festival, as well as free travel vouchers per current arrangements.
If you have purchased V/Line tickets either online or via the call centre to travel after 31 March, you will be refunded the fare difference automatically back onto the credit/debit card that was used. You don’t have to do anything, simply hold onto your ticket and travel as per normal.
If you purchased V/Line tickets from a V/Line station or Ticket agent to travel after 31 March 2023, please return to a V/Line station to receive a refund on the fare difference after bookings reopen.
